Edwin "Ned" Joseph Livingstone

May 11, 1954 ~ April 23, 2020 (age 65)

Obituary

Edwin “Ned” Joseph Livingstone, age 65, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Middletown, RI, on April 23, 2020. Born on May 11th, 1954, he was the son of the late Honorable Edwin Livingstone, Jr., and Margaret M. (Riley) Livingstone. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School and Bridgewater State College. Over the course of his life, he resided in southeastern Massachusetts and, later, on Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island, but he spent most of his days on this earth exploring what Herman Melville called “the watery part of the world,” due to his career as a commercial fisherman. No stranger to hard work, he spent decades as Captain of commercial fishing vessels. Known by many as “Hurricane Ned,” he was always at the helm of the most successful boat in the port and he had a long queue of deck hands waiting to join his crew. A lobsterman by trade, he always brought in as much catch, or more, as any boat, and shared his abundance with friends and family the way that most gave hugs or smiles. Gentle though he was, particularly in his later years, he was as much at ease in a howling offshore storm 120 miles out-to-sea as he was reading his newest paperback in his favorite La-Z-Boy recliner. When asked why, as a fisherman, he would often spend his off-days out on a recreational vessel, he would wryly respond that he was like, “A mailman who liked to go for a walk on his day off.” Whatever the weather, or the location, he loved the sea, his work, to laugh, and to make those around him feel at ease. Ned was also a loving father and amateur chef who cherished his time with family and friends. He is survived by his ex-wife of 28 years of marriage, Joyce M. Laliberte, of New Bedford, MA, with whom he had four sons: Eric Livingstone and wife Jennifer Fifer-Livingstone of Woodbury, NY; Patrick and wife Kimberly Livingstone of Holderness, NH; Daniel Livingstone and fiance Erica Lewis of Attleboro, MA; and Edmund Livingstone and wife Paolamantina Grullon Livingstone of Litchfield, CT. He is also survived by his long-time partner Colleen M. Jackson, of Middletown, RI, with whom he shared a son, Teddy. He had 10 grandchildren, all of whom he adored, and is survived by siblings Anne Marie Livingstone, Michael J. Livingstone, Margaret M. Blackburn, Mary Lou Pires, and Martha M. Livingstone. As an offshore vessel at sea often exists only in the faith of family and friends that it will soon return safely to port, there is hope that Ned is now charting a new course to another great adventure that he will tell us all about when we see him again. He will be missed by all who knew him.
